Grey Jedi

Who says the force has to have a Light and a Dark Side? This is the question proposed by the Grey Jedi. While at first the term Grey Jedi was used to refer to a Jedi who was “standing on the edge” if you will, of the Dark Side without actually crossing over to become a Sith.

An interesting characteristic of Grey Jedi is that they could wield both Light and Dark Side Force Powers. Some Jedi became Grey due to schisms when the Council re-interpreted the Jedi Code. Often whenever a Jedi disagreed with the Council they were considered Grey, but still Jedi, similar to schisms in the Christian church, where different interpretations caused some to leave the generally accepted Catholic faith. As a result, some consider Qui-Gon Jinn (Obi-Wan Kenobi’s Jedi Master) to have been a Grey Jedi.

Sith could not become Grey Jedi, because the Dark Side demanded full devotion. It was entirely possible for a Grey Jedi to use the Dark Side of the Force without being corrupted by it, unlike most Jedi. Grey Jedi rarely if ever rose in the Jedi ranks because of their “tainted” status.
